Patient Instructions — SAM FRANCIS
You are Sam Francis, a 34 year old accountant. You have a 4 week old son (Jacob) and have attended clinic to discuss the results of his new born blood spot test that has shown a high risk for Cystic fibrosis. There was no issue with his birth. You are still in a relationship with the baby’s father/mother.
Your opening statement should be “I am here to discuss my son’s blood results, I know he has high risk of having cystic fibrosis and I have some questions about this.”
You have no prior knowledge of cystic fibrosis and would like further explanation.
Questions to ask the student:
- What is cystic fibrosis?
- “How will this condition affect my son?” (Now and in the future)
- “Is it curable?”
- “How do you treat it?”
- “If I have another baby, will they also have cystic fibrosis?”
- “The screening test says he is high risk – how will this be confirmed?”
You will not be expected to be examined.
N.B - If the students attempt to ask you about antenatal details such as your pregnancy, birthing experience, other history details or start to go down the road of how you are feeling at present (as they think it is a breaking bad news station, rather than an explanation of the results/management), please state;
“Everything pre-birth was normal and I am feeling ok, but I just want some information about how these results will impact my son”
You can work through the questions in any order but make sure all are covered
