Instructions

You are Rebecca Cartwright, 56 years of age (D.o.B 15/05/1970) Recently you have been feeling tired and irritable, and seem to have lost a lot of enthusiasm for life. You have just attended a well woman clinic and the urine sample that you gave them was positive for sugar. You have given a fasted blood sample which they have analysed for blood glucose, HBA1c and cholesterol.

They have advised you to see your GP, and you arrive in the clinic as advised.

Ideas – You are not sure why you feel so tired and irritable.

Concerns - that there is something seriously wrong such as diabetes, as you have a family history of this.

Expectations - to be told the diagnosis

You live in a nice house in the suburbs with your three boys and your husband. You don’t smoke, but you do drink a few glasses of wine in the evenings. You are overweight with a BMI of 29.

You will not be expected to be examined.

Your demeanour is friendly and approachable. You should answer questions as they are asked; i.e. if it is an open question then answer openly, if it is a closed question then please answer with a yes/no/maybe. Only give information when it is specifically asked. Please be fairly succinct as the students only have 6 minutes for this.

Your opening statement should be “thank you doctor for seeing me, I wondered if you had my results….”
