Simulated Patient Brief — SAM JONES
You are Sam Jones, (own DOB) a receptionist. You have seen your GP as over the last 4 weeks you have developed severe numbness and tingling in your hands.
This will mainly be over your thumb, index and middle fingers. You have had some pains in your hands before but you wore a splint and it settled down but this was some years ago now. You have noticed that your symptoms get much worse when typing and at night-time.
Please sit and relax and have your hands and wrist examined. Please let the student know if you are in any pain. Your symptoms will get worse if the wrist is tapped or the wrist is flexed (your assessor will explain this to you).
When the student performs Phalen’s test, report tingling after 5 seconds. (Your assessor will explain this to you).
You should expect to be examined at the wrist and elbow and therefore you should wear a jumper or a jacket with a short sleeve top underneath it. If the student wants to examine your shoulder or neck then you should decline consent to do so.
